The Island Urban Indigenous Wellness Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the holistic well-being of Indigenous children and families in Nanaimo, BC. We believe in the strength and resilience of Indigenous communities and strive to create a supportive environment where children can thrive.  

Our Mission:

To empower Indigenous children and families in Nanaimo by providing culturally relevant programs and services that promote healthy development, strengthen community connections, and foster a sense of belonging.

Here in Nanaimo, on the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As, and St'uminus peoples, the Aboriginal Supported Child Development (ASCD) Team stands as a beacon of care and empowerment for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children and their families. Rooted deeply in cultural safety and unwavering sensitivity, our dedicated team proudly extends its support both on and off reserve, nurturing the healthy growth and vibrant development of these precious young ones.

We believe, wholeheartedly, that each child is a sacred gift from the Creator, possessing unique abilities and boundless potential. It is with this profound respect that we actively champion their full and meaningful participation in community life, ensuring they are seen, heard, and celebrated for the individuals they are.

Accessing the support of the ASCD Team comes at no cost to families. We are here to serve, to listen, and to empower.

Giving Thanks:

We acknowledge and give thanks to the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As and Stz'uminus First Nations whose territories we conduct our work to support our families. We give thanks to the Coast Salish people for allowing us to live, work and play on their beautiful land. We also give thanks to the Ministry of Children and Family Development who provides us with funding to share this program with Indigenous children and families.
